Emblems & Accomplishments

“One of the many joys of hiking, beyond the activity itself, is setting goals and having the satisfaction of achieving those goals. The Hundred Peaks Section, the original Southern California peakbagging group, has been recognizing the accomplishments of its members since 1946 as “emblems”. These accomplishments are recognized at the annual awards banquet with a certificate and are recorded publicly on the web site.

One can receive an emblem for climbing one hundred or two hundred of the peaks on the list, or all of the peaks on the list (of peaks active at the time of completion). There are also achievements recognized for those hiking a peak by two different routes (“Pathfinder” emblem) or three different routes (“Explorer” emblem), and for leadership and other honors.

Since 2021 there has also been a “Star” emblem for hiking the entire list of 50 Star Emblem peaks. These peaks were chosen to represent every section of Southern California and include the most interesting and iconic HPS peaks. It also includes some of the most challenging peaks.

We invite you to join us in playing the “Hundred Peaks Game”, as the Section’s founder named it.

100 Peaks Emblem
Awarded to members who have ascended 100 different peaks on the HPS Peak List.

200 Peaks Emblem
Awarded to members who have ascended 200 different peaks on the HPS Peak List.

List Completion
Awarded to members who have ascended all the peaks on the HPS Peak List one or more times.

Star Peaks Emblem
Awarded to members who have ascended all of the HPS Star Peaks (see indicated peaks on the peak list) in 2021 or later.

Thousand Peaks Emblem
Awarded to members who have ascended 1000 HPS-listed peaks (no more than one ascent of a given peak on a single calendar day.

Pathfinder Emblems Completion
Awarded to members who have ascended 100 peaks, 200 peaks, and all peaks on the HPS Peak List by two significantly different routes).

Explorer Emblems Completion
Awarded to members who have ascended 100 peaks, 200 peaks, and all peaks on the HPS Peak List by three significantly different routes.

Snowshoe Emblems Completion
Awarded to members who have ascended 25 peaks, 50 peaks, and 75 peaks on the HPS Peak List on snowshoes.

100 Peaks Leadership Emblem
Awarded to leaders who officially led or assisted on 100 different peaks on the HPS Peak List.

200 Peaks Leadership Emblem
Awarded to leaders who officially led or assisted on 200 different peaks on the HPS Peak List.
